What does a Jaw Cyst Feel Like?

What is a Jaw Cyst?

A cyst is a sac of tissue that has either fluid or soft material inside it. Cysts can grow in different parts of the body, including in the face or mouth. Thus, a jaw cyst is a growth or a lesion of fluid that forms inside the soft tissues underneath the jawbone. They usually form around the roots of your teeth. These cysts are typically benign (non-cancerous).

Jaw cysts can vary in size and severity. They grow gradually, and they can either remain sterile or become infected. Some can grow quite aggressive and can upset the surrounding bone and tissue or displace teeth.

Why do Jaw Cysts Form?

Jaw cysts usually form around dead, buried, or broken teeth. A dead tooth is a tooth that is no longer receiving a fresh supply of blood, usually as a result of infection or trauma. It is usually characterized by a (black or brown) discoloration.

A buried/impacted tooth is a tooth that is barely or partially erupted from the gum. If there is a disruption of normal dental development, the soft cells in the mouth can take advantage of this abnormality and develop into a cyst. Jaw cysts will rarely grow under a healthy, properly aligned tooth.

In rare cases, dental cysts are part of a genetic syndrome that has other symptoms (e.g., Gorlin’s syndrome). Your dentist or surgeon can help you identify the cause of your jaw cyst.

How do I know if I have a Jaw Cyst?

Most jaw cysts can grow very slowly for months or even years undetected. On its own, a cyst is rarely painful. Most of them remain small, so unless it grows dangerously big, you might never tell that you have one.

Many jaw cysts are only detectable when;

  1. They become infected and form an abscess. This can cause swelling and incredible pain.
  2. They steadily grow and replace bony tissue in the jaw. This can weaken the jaw leading to damaged or loosened teeth.
  3. They press again the teeth and other soft tissue impacting the structure of the mouth.
  4. They disrupt the normal function of the teeth and mouth. This can make it harder to speak, chew, or swallow.
  5. They press against and damage the nerves in the jaw bone, leading to numbness, sensitivity, or tingling in the gums, teeth, or lips.

Some people only find out about the cysts if they encounter some trauma to the face, and the jaw breaks easily due to the weakening of bones. In some cases, a dentist might need to take an x-ray for unrelated dental issues and coincidentally finds the cysts (they show up as darker areas or ‘holes’ in the x-ray).

How Do I Prevent/Treat a Jaw Cyst?

As stated above, as long as your teeth remain healthy, there is a very minimal chance of cysts forming. However, in the event a tooth dies or remains buried, it is essential to visit your dentist immediately so that they address the nerves and tissues around it to minimize the chances of a cyst forming.

Assuming you already have a cyst, the size, severity, and type of the cyst will inform your dentist or surgeon on the best course of action. As such, treatment can range between extracting some teeth, root canal, and/or minor dental surgery. Usually, the best treatment could include all three procedures. These procedures will simultaneously address the cause of the cyst, support the healing and repair process, and prevent the formation of another cyst.

How Do I Stop Grinding my Teeth?

Teeth grinding, known by its clinical term bruxism, is the conscious or unconscious grinding or clenching of teeth. It is a common occurrence in children, but most of them grow out of it with time. However, bruxism can develop at any age. In most people, it usually happens unconsciously at night as rhythmic clenching and contractions of the jaw. During the day, it can occur when one is doing strenuous activities such as lifting heavy objects, or when mentally concentrating on a task like writing or driving. 

Symptoms of Teeth Grinding

The biggest giveaway of teeth grinding is waking up with sore jaws. This means that you grind your teeth in your sleep. Another common symptom is having headaches. According to the Bruxism Association, people who grind their teeth are three times more likely to suffer from headaches. 

Depending on how relentless your teeth grinding is, other symptoms could include stiffness in the shoulders and neck area, ear pain, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain/discomfort, enlargement of facial muscles, and sleep disorders. Also, teeth grinding causes wear in your teeth, which could lead to fracture, teeth loss, or leave your teeth exposed to dental issues in the future. 


In children, teeth grinding is mainly caused by anxiety and teeth misalignment. This is also true in adults. Additionally, the Bruxism Association also regards stress, smoking, heavy alcohol use, and caffeine, depression, and sleep disorders as possible causes of teeth grinding in adults. There isn’t enough evidence to elucidate why the above might cause bruxism.  

However, research has shown that bruxism manifests more frequently in people who snore or suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, and in people who regularly use drugs and substances. Additionally, about 70% of adults with bruxism work in stressful environments leading to the correlation between stress and teeth grinding.

Foods to Avoid During Quarantine to Protect Your Teeth

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has brought the world to a standstill. As a result, numerous dental offices have closed most of their operations except for emergency dental care only. It is likely that during this period, you will be spending more time at home than you ever have or ever will. Thus, you will need to take extra care of your teeth. The food we eat plays a very important role in maintaining or compromising our dental health. Therefore, we have compiled a list of foods that you should avoid to save yourself a trip to the dentist during this pandemic;

  1. Hard, Long-lasting Candies and Gummies

For obvious reasons, you should try to avoid candies, quarantined, or not. People tend to bite into hard candies, and this can crack a tooth. Additionally, hard candies and gummies stick and cling to the surface of your teeth or in between teeth. These stuck bits can take a while to dissolve or dislodge, and this can encourage bacterial action leading to cavities on or between your teeth. 

It is also important to note that dried fruits are gummier and sticker than regular fruits. Thus, bits of dried fruits can get stuck between your teeth and have the same effect as with gummies. Dried fruits are packed with non-soluble cellulose fibre, which can bind and trap sugars on and around the tooth. 

2. Acidic Foods
You probably have a couple of acidic foods and drinks in your house, natural or otherwise. These include lemons, grapefruits, tomatoes, apple cider vinegar, fizzy drinks, etc. While some of these are not necessarily harmful, the acid in them can erode the teeth enamel making it porous and susceptible to cavities and staining. If you have to take acidic drinks, use a straw. If you eat acidic foods, rinse your teeth thoroughly afterward. 

Some chewable vitamin pills and vitamin waters can also have concentrated acids and can have the same effect on teeth enamel. 

3. Junk and Starchy foods 

Most of us are spending a lot of time in front of the TV snacking away. As we munch on those potato chips, it is important to understand that despite them not being sugary, bits of them get trapped between our teeth. Because of the oil and starch in them, the bits will encourage bacterial activity, or the starch will convert into sugar. This can precipitate a gum disease, a cavity, or it can decalcify the enamel. 

4. Sodas, Sports Drinks, Coffee, Iced Tea
These drinks have a triple-whammy effect on teeth. Sodas and energy drinks are the leading sources of added sugar in the food industry. We already know sugar will cause you cavities. The drinks also contain phosphoric and citric acids, which will erode the tooth enamel with time. The drinks are also colored, which means that they can potentially stain your teeth.

5. Alcoholic Drinks, Wines and Cigarettes 

The worst effect of these products on the mouth is that they inhibit the production of saliva, making your mouth dry. Saliva is a very important component of oral health as it helps to wash away food particles and keep oral bacteria balanced. Thus, if your mouth is left too dry, your oral health is compromised. Wines and spirits also contain acids that erode the enamel. Not to mention that the cigarettes are known to stain teeth and compromise the health of the gums.

Why It is Important to Take Care of Your Teeth

Unlike most other parts of our bodies, our teeth are one of the body parts that we cannot naturally replace. Hence, taking care of our teeth is a worthy cause in and of itself. It can prevent a multitude of health issues, improve our quality of life, and save us money.

  1. For Health Reasons

Oral hygiene reveals a lot about the general health of a person. Saliva is an excellent diagnostic tool as well as one’s main line of defense against diseases. Saliva contains antibodies that defend the mouth from various bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

For instance, saliva contains a protein called histatin, which prevents an overgrowth of a fungus called candida albicans. This fungus thrives when there is an imbalance of healthy and unhealthy flora in the mouth. A multitude of reasons causes this imbalance, key among them being poor oral hygiene. The fungus can cause oral thrush and it can travel down the gut and cause digestive problems.

Poor oral care can also result lead to the formation of plaque and tartar. Tartar is impossible to remove with a toothbrush and with time, it hardens around the gum. Tartar can accelerate an overgrowth of bacteria which might attack the soft tissue of the gum making it inflamed, painful, and loose (gingivitis). If not treated, the gum can pull away from the teeth and form pockets that are susceptible to bacterial infection (periodontitis).

Lastly, poor oral care can cause dental cavities. Apart from teeth loss, dental cavities can also cause abscesses, jaw pain, headaches, or in extreme cases, TMJ (temporomandibular joint) pain.
